The Mountain Viper can be found in mountainous regions in southern Hunan and northern Guandong at elevations of 800–1,300 m (2,600–4,300 ft) above sea level.

It can often be spotted lying on lichen covered rocks and logs waiting to ambush small animals as its prey.
